Standard & Customised Tunnel Thrusters
Brunvoll Standard & Customised Tunnel Thrusters are designed for the most demanding requirements according to North Sea offshore standards and are used on all types of ships.
Brunvoll's tunnel thrusters feature a special blade design to avoid cavitation and ensure optimum thrust. The compact design of hub and gear house allows for the thruster unit to be mounted in narrow areas of the vessel’s hull in addition to high thrust values.
All tunnel thrusters are delivered with changeable bearings of high performance self-lubricating and wear resistant bearing material. This allows for less wear and tear and easier maintenance.

Low Noise Tunnel Thrusters
Thruster noise is a major problem for crews. The stress and discomfort it causes may threaten both performance and safety on board. Also, quieter manoeuvring means better sleep, improving the alertness and efficiency of the crew. And passengers enjoy a new degree of comfort.
Noise levels of 75-88 dB(A) are typical in cabins next to or above conventional tunnel thrusters. Brunvoll’s advanced technology, where the thruster is resiliently mounted within a full length double tunnel, can cut this by up to 15 dB(A). Combined with other measures, noise reductions of up to 20-25 dB(A) have been verified.

Azimuth Propulsion Thrusters
The dedicated Brunvoll Azimuth Propulsion Thruster is based on Brunvoll's extensive in-house experience with design, production and servicing of Tunnel and Azimuth Thrusters since 1965.
(Push Ducted, Pull Open and Rim Driven)
Brunvoll Azimuth Propulsion Thrusters are available with controllable pitch or fixed pitch propellers, either with or without propeller nozzle, and can be mounted both bolt-in or weld-in. Power can be transmitted via L-drive or Z-drive.
Also available are Azimuth Propulsion Thrusters based on the Rim Driven Thruster (RDT) concept with Permanent Magnet (PM) motor technology.

Retractable Azimuth Thrusters
Brunvoll Retractable Azimuth Thrusters are used for dynamic positioning on offshore vessels. The units have proven their worth in a variety of demanding applications, from research ships and coast guard vessels to offshore supply vessels and shuttle tankers operating in the harsh climate of the North Atlantic. They have even proven invaluable for auxiliary and emergency "take home" propulsion.
(Standard / CombiThruster)
Reliable, Proven & Flexible Technology
- Almost an industry standard for shuttle tankers
- Shock-qualified thrusters available for naval vessels
- A popular choice for product tankers, reefers, chemical tankers and container ships in the merchant navy
- Can serve as an take-home propulsion
- A special version, the CombiThruster, works as a tunnel thruster in upper position and as an azimuth thruster in lower position

Rim Driven Thrusters
Rim Driven Thrusters (RDT) are electrically driven with a permanent magnet (PM) motor. PM technology provides greater flexibility in selection of motor speed (number of motor poles) and a motor with high efficiency running with a lower temperature.
Higher efficiency, less environmental impact
The Brunvoll Rim Driven Thruster saves energy, offering higher propeller efficiency and lower environmental impact with exceptionally low noise. The RDT concept creates exciting potential for both manoeuvring and main propulsion.
Minimised Maintenance
The thruster, propeller and motor are in one compact unit – there is no need for an external motor, shafts or couplings. The bearing design for the RDT eliminates the need of oil lubrication and there are no dynamic seals. Hence, the bearings (patents pending), are designed to minimise maintenance costs and eliminate any oil pollution.
